Costa Rica Glenview

Today was an incredible day! We started the day off by hiking up a mountain to repel down a waterfall! It was the scariest thing we’ve done so far. It was like going on zipline but downwards! It was super fun! Then, we headed to a school where we helped paint the school and play area! It was nice to know we were doing something good for the people of Costa Rica! The kids really appreciated it! Last, we headed to the Studio Hotel for a second time and had a delicious quesadilla dinner. I’m super sad that its the last day tomorrow, but, I’m feeling homesick anyway!

Glenview Costa Rica 2013

What another incredible day in Costa Rica with Attea kids and Discovery Student Adventures! Today we repelled down a series of waterfalls. Each and every one of our kids successfully completed the repels. I was again proud of their efforts. After repelling, we visited a local elementary school and helped paint walls and a play area with hop scotch, four square and a little mural celebrating our new connection with the students. The out pouring of love and gratitude from these kids was amazing. I really think it touched our kids hearts. Finally, it was back to the hotel for a delicious dinner of chicken quesadillas. Tomorrow is our last full day here in Costa Rica before returning home on Wednesday.

After the waterfalls we went to a school and painted their walls. It was so much fun! I ended up playing with all the little kids and we were playing human tug of war and I accidentally fell on a tiny little Costa Rican boy! My friend got a video of it so Ill so you all it when I get home. I felt soo bad. That’s it for today. I’ll blaaag about tomorrow tomorrow night. I love you all!

Glenview Costa Rica 2013

Hello Guys! Costa Rica has been very fun! We went to this hotel next to the Volcano. My room was filled with bugs and lizards and a bird who makes a lot of noise. Anyway yesterday I went on the ziplines and I am afraid of heights, but I conquered my fear and went on! It was the best part of the trip! After that I went to a giftshop and got a lot of stuff. So then we went to the hot springs it was calm and relaxing. My favorite spring was the hottest one a lot of people said it was too warm but it was not bye!

Costa Rica, anyone?

Good Morning Chicago…and the Discovery Student Adventures family.

This is Brandon R., a teacher of science and history in the greater Chicago area and I am about to embark on my second trip with Discovery. Last year, students from Glenview and I jet-setted off to New Zealand and Australia. What an adventure THAT was! This year, a whole new group of kids and I will be off to the jungles of Costa Rica to put the Adventure in Discovery Student Adventures! We cannot wait for the fun to begin! It all starts with the joy of O’Hare International Airport, then Dallas where we will meet a bunch of other adverturers, and finally on to Costa Rica. It’s a cool morning in Chicago today, and in a few hours we’ll be on a cool adventure that we will never forget!

Winding down in Greymouth, New Zealand

After waking up in Christchurch this morning, we headed into the Antarctic center and saw penguins, experienced an Antarctic storm, slid down an ice slide, and watched a cool 4-D movie. Reily got her bag from the airport and we were off to experience Maori culture near Greymouth. We experienced their language, culture and customs.

I was SO impressed with all the kids, as they showed poise and grace as we experienced some unusual customs…like touching our noses to each of our hosts, singing to them (we did the national anthem), and listening to Ben speak about us in their native tongue.

We were next led on an expedition on the river in search of “Pounamu” maori jade. After our search with beautiful snow-capped mountains in the background, we went back to the craft shop where maori shaped jade into wonderful jewelry and artwork. Some snazzy gifts were bought and we headed to our hotel in Greymouth for dinner and an early night’s sleep. Tomorrow is another exciting adventure. Stay tuned….

Great job Peter, Jan, Alek, Chris, Michael, Jack, Reily, Morgan and Mrs. Trsar, too….also, Paul, our driver and guide. I could not ask for a better group for our first amazing adventure with Discovery.

Jack

We’re in the middle of our fourth flight on the way to Christ church. The first was four hours, the second close to 17, the third close to three, and the last an hour and a half. Everyone is exhausted. When we get to the hotel I could sleep for hours. That dream was crushed when I found out that wake up time is 6:30. I left my lanyard on the third plane. I realized that after we got through security and all of the other stuff you go through when you enter a new country. It took me forever to get through customs because my bag has beef jerky in it. At least I got to keep it. New Zealand’s very nice and so are the people I’ve met so far. I can’t wait for tomorrow when we start our journey. The Qantas planes are very nice. I’ve watched a lot of modern family. They even had some good movies to watch and games to play. I rewatched the hunger games. Even though I had already seen the movie and read the books, I was still concerned that katniss wouldn’t make it. All of this flying is no fun but I’m sure it will be worth it because I will have the experience of a life time. I remember the first time I heard about this trip was when some kids were talking about it in class. It seemed like I could never go. I sit on this plane and think back and I think ‘this is it, I’m almost there’. Thanks to everyone who supported me and made this possible, especially my parents. Bye for now,
Jack
