“Canyon Christened”

Fun in the canyon

We have had an AMAZING 3 days so far! We landed in Arizona and hit the ground running. We had a fabulous Mexican lunch, dropped our bags at the Embassy Suits and were whisked up to the Lowell Observatory by our fabulous driver, Rick.

At the observatory, we were able to see Saturn, it’s rings and its moons! What an awesome experience! We also saw the moon up close and are pretty sure the man in the moon waved to us! Venus looked lovely and mysterious as she glowed through the end of the monstrous telescope. The beautiful weather was perfectly accented by the unmistakable and unmatchable smell of the ponderosa pine wafting through the mountains. (Can someone please bottle that?!?)

We hit the Grand Canyon early and our mouths stood agape for most of the day. We hiked down to Ooh Aah point (incredible moment on the edge of the massive canyon) and then (gasp…wheeze…) we hiked back out again.

One of the most amazing points of the day came after we learned about the California Condor. The ranger told us that there are only about 68 left in the park and what did our tour guide, the amazing Joseph, spot just as we were about to leave the park? That’s right, a California Condor perched on the edge of an outcropping! We all blew on him and willed him to fly with our minds. He spread his wings and we all collectively gasped as we watched him alight and soar across the canyon. Remarkable! Truly a once on a lifetime moment.

We ended the day at the watchtower, which afforded us a breathtaking view of the sunset. The kids kept commenting that every turn in the canyon presented them with a different and more beautiful view. It was a magical way to end the evening of day 2!

Stay tuned for “kid comments” and pictures!
