Our Fabulous Tour Guide

20130620-185453.jpg

Throughout this trip we were accompanied by Cesar, our tour guide. Everyday he helped us learn the Costa Rican culture and translated the Spanish language at our various locations. He has a vast knowledge of all the wildlife and the history of Costa Rica. During our bus rides, he pointed out unique specious of animals, like crocodiles and monkeys, we don’t see at home. While we were shopping, he was very generous on the amount of time we could spend at the markets looking for souvenirs. Cesar traveled with us to all of our destinations, and we discovered he loves to joke around. Not only was Cesar intelligent but he was also fun-loving and a great addition our group! Our trip would not be the same without him!

Stops Along the Way

We have spent many hours on the bus traveling from place to place, but between the down time, mostly spent catching up on sleep, we made a few really fun stops. We have stopped at Costa Rican grocery stores to pick up the necessary items including towels, shampoo, and of course cookies. This was our first encounter with the Costa Rican currency colones. We quickly learned that 500 colones equals one dollar. As we continued through the mountains and rainforest we stopped at a local fruit stand and got the chance to sample some delicious tropical fruits, my favorite was the passion fruit. As we neared the end of the trip it was time to buy ourselves, and our family members of course, some presents. We made a stop at a souvenir superstore that had anything we could have possibly wanted. And yes sorry parents most of the spending money you sent along with us got blown there! One last and unexpected stop we made was at a bridge, and you along with all of us may be wondering why we stopped here, but after we made our way half way acrosse we quickly found out. We were told to only bring our cameras, and when we looked down to the river banks below us it became very apparent way, there on the shore were about five very big crocodiles. We had already seen a few little ones in Pacuare but none that compared in size to these! So we may have spent endless hours in the bus everyday traveling to our next exciting adventure, but they were never spent without a very fun stopped filled with new, and sometimes expensive, things!

Food in Costa Rica

We have been pleasantly surprised with all the food we’ve been given throughout the trip! There’s lots of beans and rice but none of which are bland. Its always nice to have the occasional meat option at the meals. The fruits that are consistent at every meal are pineapple and watermelon which also make delicious fresh juices! Specifically, a lot of people have raved about the watermelon juice! The desserts are unique but part of the Costa Rican culture like flan and rice pudding. The pancakes have been amazing; they’re a thousand times better than in Wisconsin! The best dinner by far was at the hot springs. It was our first day we were given steak as an option at dinner time.

Pacific Ocean

Now my feet have touched the ocean blue
and my dream has come true!

Finally, after many years of passion, I have seen and swam in the ocean. It wasn’t as cold as I expected it to be, a plus. The waves were smaller than the ones at the Caribbean, but strong and big enough to body surf a bit. We had to be careful on the shoreline because sometimes an unseen rock or branch would wash up on our feet. It hurts. Many of us went searching for buried treasure in the sand and found pretty pieces of coral and seashells. I found a dead sea urchin. There also was a lot of sunburns brought back. We were very tired when we got back, but had a lot of fun relaxing at the beach.

Kayaking

Today we went kayaking On the coast Of the Pacific ocean in a village of Jaco. We kayaked from one side of the ocean to the secluded beach. We swam and had a picnic at the beach.

Rancho Margot

We visited Rancho Margot yesterday, a carbon negative farm. They grow all their own food, make their own soap, make their own energy with water generators, heat their water by running pipes through their compost, and cool their homes by growing plants on their roof. We made compost with them. It is a very beautiful place!

La Fortuna High School

We had a great experience meeting kids our age. It made us appreciate what a nice school we have, and how many classes are offered to us. We got to tour the school’s farm while practicing our Spanish by asking questions. The game we played with the other students made us realize how we are all alike.

Parismina

I had such a good time in Parismina. I got to learn a lot about sea turtles and what they do there to help save them. Some of the things I learned were that Leatherback sea turtles dont have a hard shell in fact if you just scatch their backs you can make the turtle bleed. I also learned that turtles release salt from the salt water through their tears. I loved how interesting everything was and wish I could go back.

Beautiful Pacuare

Close your eyes and imagine the ocean in your ears and the sun on your face, with the smell of exotic flowers all around you. This is Pacuare. It’s a beautiful place surrounded by water on all sides, with one side facing the Caribbean sea. Perfect place to stay for the zombie apocalypse. The Pacuare reserve hosts marine biologists, with their main study being turtles. They taught us how to tag and scan the beach at night for turtles laying their eggs. I would gladly go back to this beautiful island again. -Ali L
